  1. In US history, originally a member of a
  2. `vigilance committee', a self-appointed group
  3. to maintain public order in the absence of
  4. organized authority. The vigilante tradition
  5. continues with present-day urban groups
  6. patrolling streets and subways to deter
  7. muggers and rapists, for example, the
  8. Guardian Angels in New York, and the
  9. Community Volunteers in London. Early
  10. vigilante groups included the `Regulators' in
  11. South Carolina in the 1760s, and in
  12. Pennsylvania 1794 during the Whiskey
  13. Rebellion. Many more appeared in the 19th
  14. century in frontier towns. Once authorized
  15. police forces existed, vigilante groups such
  16. as the post-Civil War Ku Klux Klan operated
  17. outside the law, often as perpetrators of mob
  18. violence such as lynching.
